MyHockey Rankings

MyHockey Rankings

MYHockey tries to use consistent standards in labeling teams. For example, a stronger squirt team playing in a lower peewee league will be identified as the same team level even if the two teams play in different local leagues.

The math behind MYHockey rankings is explained on our Ratings and Rankings page. Teams can also get an explanation of their ranking on their team information page.

Team Ratings

MYHockey’s rating system is designed to be a quick and easy way for coaches to see how their team ranks. The goal is to provide a good starting point for scheduling games. It also gives parents and players an idea of where their team may end up at the end of the season in a tournament setting.

The ratings are based on the actual goal differential of each game. When a team wins by a larger margin than expected, their rating will increase while the opponent’s rating will decrease. The same logic applies to losses.

As more games are played, the accuracy of the ratings increases. This is because the ratings are based on how well a team performs against their opponents and how close they are to their overall goal differential. Teams that play many games against the same opponents tend to have a consistent performance and therefore a fairly accurate rating.

One problem is that many teams do not play other teams outside of their league or geographic area and the ratings can be skewed as a result. Another issue is that some scores are not entered into the system or do not get recorded in a timely fashion. This is most likely due to a lack of volunteers covering the league/division or because game scores are not being posted to websites that are easily accessible by MYHockey volunteers.

Team Schedules

The growth of myhockeyrankings has come from a need for real, unbiased, information to help people schedule games. In the beginning, myhockeyrankings was used for just that purpose, but over time it has evolved into a tool that helps all aspects of hockey. As a result, we have made some changes to our game rules and procedures to better serve the hockey community.

In order to be included in myhockeyrankings, all games must have a valid start date. This generally means that the game must be played after September 1st for USA teams and August 15th for Canadian teams. The exception to this rule is Midget pre/post season games.

Teams may play a game that is not in their regular season but this should only occur when both teams coaches agree, prior to the game, that the game will be for instructional purposes and not for competition (we do require a written or email agreement from the coaches). MYHockey also does allow teams to remove an instructional game from their score history after the game is over and they have verified that the game did not count in their regular season.

MYHockey also does not allow a team to change its roster for a tournament or showcase and then have that game count in its ratings. This is considered a manipulation of the system and does hurt the integrity of the ratings.

Team Statistics

MYHockey is a mathematically computed ratings system. It does not know if the teams you play are AAA, AA or A. The system combines all teams in a given age level into one statistical pool and then calculates your SCHED and AGD based upon game performance. There is no preferential treatment for a team from a particular league.

Because of the nature of how teams are rated, it is important that teams get a minimum of 20 games played in order to be accurate. If a team only plays a few games, the rating may be skewed by the quality of the opponents or by the fact that they are not playing anyone else.

In addition to getting a minimum of 20 games, it is very important that the teams you play be correctly classified as either A, AA or AAA. If a team is not accurately classified, it will impact your ability to get games and will make it difficult for you to compare your team to others.

If your team has a problem with a classification, please contact us. We do not want to be the roster police, but we will remove a game from the rankings if both coaches agree that it should be excluded prior to the start of the game and that agreement is documented in some way.

Neil Lodin sat hunched over his laptop in the dim glow of a basement office, culling through thousands of game results that had come in over the weekend. He deleted duplicates, resolved complaints and watched for statistical anomalies. His website, MYHockey Rankings (MHR), is a staple of youth hockey, beloved by coaches who use it to schedule games against teams with similar talent levels and scouts who look at it to identify up-and-coming players. But critics say it has become a weapon for parents who prioritize winning over player development.
